About SilverKeeper 1.1.4  release notes
(these are also located inside the SilverKeeper application folder)

SilverKeeper is compatible with OS X up to v10.4.11 (updated January 28, 2008)

Special note for people upgrading to Leopard:
v1.1.4 of SilverKeeper is not compatible with OS X 10.5.x, Leopard. LaCie does not recommend using SilverKeeper v1.1.4 with Leopard. A fix is being investigated.

OS X 10.5.x does include an excellent backup program, Time Machine, which is quite easy to use, and is highly recommended. You also can use the System restore capability of Apple Disk Utility to make a complete disk backup. Your LaCie drive is compatible with OS X 10.5.x and Time Machine.

As with any other system upgrade, it is important to make a backup BEFORE upgrading your system, and making sure that backup is safe, secure, and exactly what you want BEFORE upgrading your computer.

If you have been using SilverKeeper with OS X 10.3.x and 10.4.x, it is highly recommended that you make a complete system backup before upgrading to OS X 10.5. If you make a bootable backup, be sure to confirm that the backup is correct BEFORE upgrading your system. Once made and verified, unmount/Eject and disconnect the drive, and place in a safe place.

Then it will be OK to update your computer for OS X 10.5.x

Should anything go wrong, you will have a complete backup of your computer available.

You will also want to check your other important applications to make sure they are compatible with Leopard. It will be important to do this BEFORE upgrading to OS X 10.5.x

This website will be updated when more information is available and compatibility can be confirmed.

SilverKeeper is compatible with OS 9.2.2, OS X 10.2.8, 10.3.9, and OS X 10.4.x up to and including 10.4.11. This includes the PowerPC and Intel based Macintosh computers.

After any system update, users should start a fresh new backup, rather than trying to update a backup from a previous version of OS X. Remember to reformat your external backup drive using the version of Apple Disk Utility that comes with the new version of OS X. A simple Erase is not sufficient. The format should be Mac OS Extended, no Journaling. SilverKeeper cannot be used to update a backup made with a previous version of the OS.

SilverKeeper is a freeware application from LaCie that automates backups to external storage devices like hard drives, and other removable storage devices that have IDE, ATA/ATAPI, SCSI, USB, or FireWire interfaces.

Essentially any read/write device that can mount a writeable volume on the Macintosh Desktop can be used with SilverKeeper. Note well: refer to the release notes for limitations when using network shares. SilverKeeper cannot make a complete volume backup to a network share.

SilverKeeper requires OS X 10.2.8 or OS 9.2.2 or later. This includes compatibility with Panther OS X 10.3.9 and Tiger OS X 10.4.11

This version of SilverKeeper is not recommended for older versions of the Mac OS.

Mac OS 9 users should be sure to have CarbonLib 1.6 installed (link). It is recommended that you update to 9.2.2 also.

Documentation is provided as a set of SilverKeeper Help files that are installed with the application. If you would like to preview the SilverKeeper Help files, please download from these links. After mounting or expanding, double-click on "contents.html" to view the Help file.
